Postcard from Henri Cartier-Bresson

© Henri Cartier-Bresson/Magnum
Going through an old Hard Drive today I found this: the scan of a postcard that Henri Cartier-Bresson sent me in 2002. Cartier-Bresson was one of the reasons I took up photography so I sent him some examples of my work and he very kindly wrote back!

Old neg, new scan

I just spent a few hours putting together a new portrait portfolio and decided to include an image taken in Jerusalem during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War. The shopkeeper was sitting outside his closed shop because there were no tourists to buy souvenirs. Taken with a Mamiya 7 II and a 65mm lens.

'Soldbuch'

Pictures taken in France as part of my long-term 'Soldbuch' project. Just before I took the top image a dog ran out of the gates and - although not exactly The Hound of the Baskervilles - went kind of berserk. My Leica CM had jammed, hence the double exposure.

バラバライカ : ink of blue black roses

"On the next day after the catastrophe
(3.11, 2011) in my country, I started to
contact my friends through Facebook,
in the name 'Art Charity Activity for
Japan'. My message read: 'Please send
me what you feel, imagine towards the
big earthquake in Japan, or whatever
you are holding now'. I was so...

...day comes, I have decided to edit this
project book. No concept, no perfec-
tion, but pure sincerity and sympathy
in here."

Chris Dorley-Brown print

Another stormy sky over London but I didn't take this one. It's titled ‘Holly Street Estate, 1988′ and comes from Chris Dorley-Brown's 'Hackney Archive'. I recently purchased it from Contact Editions as a 10×12″ Digital C-type (edition of 200) and it cost just £30 plus postage! More info from the Contact Editions website.
