This portrait of Robert Lawrence is the first image I've made towards a body of work that will focus on British and Argentinian veterans of the Falkland-Malvinas conflict.

For an action fought on Mount Tumbledown, Lawrence - then a Lieutenant in the Scots Guards - was awarded the Military Cross. He was seriously wounded in the final hours of the conflict and his story dramatised in the 1988 film Tumbledown.

Lawrence is now the manager and co-founder of Global Adventure Plus, an organisation that aims to help physically and mentally injured ex-service personnel.

A crafty shot I took at a Martin Parr Private View at Strand Gallery last night. Parr's recent Oxfam commission - 'What Would You Save' - highlights how climate change is currently affecting people in the Mekong Delta. There's a You Tube clip here and a piece on the Guardian website showing portraits from Vietnam and a series shot with celebrities in the UK. Grayson Perry's portrait (with teddy/"living god", Alan Measles) features in the show.

I first met Marcel in 2008 on my second trip to the Lyon area for my Soldbuch book project. This image was taken last week when we met again to be interviewed by the local, Montluel-based newspaper, Journal de la Côtière. Marcel is the only person I have met from the area with first-hand memories of the prisoner of war camp in which my grandfather was held.

'Black Scabbard Research Centre' by Pedro Ramos

I know very little about this book and have purposely avoided finding out more for fear that dissection may destroy its charm. BSRC is a beautifully understated, zine-y production that delivers it's mysterious narrative with vital, rough edges. The images seem to come from a few different sources - aside from original photography - including video and maybe even newspaper clippings. I read somewhere that BSRC was photographed on the island of Madeira, which is apparently the only place you'll find the black scabbardfish, and where its author was born.

The format is A5, comprising 32 pages in an edition of 150 signed and numbered copies. It used to be available from Motto Distribution (10€) but I don't know if they have any left.

Going through my Ethiopian contact sheets recently I found some portraits that hadn't previously seen the light of day: the older man was a guard at a church in Lalibela and I think the boy was a monk, living on an island in the middle of Lake Tana; the third chap was a shepherd from the Oromia Region near the Kenyan border. All were taken on Kodak 200 Ultra Colour with a Nikon F100 + 85mm f1.8 that had a pretty weird bokeh when shot wide open. The last image is of the ceiling of the Debre Berhan Sellasie Church near Gondar.

'Studio' by Harry Watts

Back in October 2010 I met Harry Watts very briefly at the Brighton Photo Biennial where he gave me a copy of his book, Studio, published by Black Box Press. With an introduction by Aaron Schuman it comprises 17 colour medium format images that turn the tables on the photographers' studio by making it the subject of photographs instead of just a place where photographs are made of other things. Stark and dramatic lighting imbues the tools and detritus of the studio with qualities of the rare or unknown and illuminates them, as if for the first time, like objects found on the floor of a deep ocean. Edition of 500.

Canon G12

I recently upgraded from my G9 to a G12 and this is the first RAW image I've processed. It's a shame that the G12 still has the small 1/1.7" sensor but the new DIGIC 4 processor makes good use of it and images seem fairly clean up to around ISO 1600. This was shot at ISO 100 in the Square Mile earlier this week.

Two examples of multiple/compound exposures that I've been experimenting with recently. Because the Holga's shutter is fixed around 1/125 and the widest aperture available is f/8, in dull conditions exposure has to be built up. The top image also has a split focus (i.e. 5 exposures at 1m and 5 exposures at 10m).

OK, last post of archive material for the moment, I promise - new work coming soon! Anyway, I shot these images of [a then unknown] Matt Smith together with another cast member when Smith was playing Thomas Becket in the NYT's production of T. S. Elliot's Murder in the Cathedral. Pretty terrible pictures, I know, but in my defence they were never meant to be 'portraits' as I was only there to interview them. Taken with a Nikon F100 and a 28mm F/2.8, I think.

Broken Manual (Special Edition)

I received an e-mail this morning about a really interesting new Steidl book with which Alec Soth and the writer Lester B. Morrison have "created an underground instruction manual for those looking to escape their lives".

Each of the the (initial) special edition of 300 are housed - à la Stephen Gill - in the shell of a hollowed-out book and include a "Liberation Billfold Manifest" as well as a signed/numbered print. The whole set will be installed at Minneapolis' Walker Art Center as part of Soth's exhibition there before being shipped to buyers in January 2011. More information here.

After not uploading anything for some time I had planned to post quite a long piece about the current iPhone/Hipstamatic craze, but - despite the fact I'd saved it - Blogger managed to loose the whole thing. Quite apt, really, as the post dealt with notions of 'real' media (i.e. prints/negs) and how images are now usually captured digitally/shared through the web etc. Anyway, I bought a Holga GFN a few weeks ago and these images are from the first film I put through it.

André is currently en route to Sweden where he will be editing his next book, 'Smell of Tiger Precedes Tiger'.
